How Permanent is “Permanent Jewelry”?

Permanent Jewelry is still a pretty new thing. It’s basically having a gold, gold filled or sterling silver chain (with or without charms and such) welded on to your person. Sometimes, people opt for other metals like stainless steel or colorful enamel accent plated chains as well. Typically, a small jump ring is used to connect the ends of the chain and it is welded on with a quick snap. The idea is that you don’t/can’t take it off. That’s how it gets the title “permanent”.

A lot of us bristle at the thought of permanence because it entails commitment.  And I don’t know about you, but I am careful about what I commit myself to.  So a permanent piece of jewelry may not be that appealing.  But…

The fact of the matter is that nothing is really that permanent. Permanent Jewelry included. And that’s actually a good thing. Because sometimes, new stuff is nice. And it’s funny because I think the first time I thought about permanent jewelry, there was an odd feeling of trapped-ness that I felt. Until I realized that a simple nail clipper could set me free from any chain I decided I wanted to part with (for whatever reason). You just clip the jump ring that was welded and you have a chain that can be re-welded back on. Easy Peasy!

Here’s the real deal. Permanent Bracelets are actually sort of “Semi-Permanent Jewelry”.

For some people, they could last forever, or at least for a really, really long time. I mean, a lot of us wear the same jewelry day in and day out and don’t actually take them off for months or even years at a time. For others, it won’t last forever. It might break. Or they might change their mind. Or if it comes off and they want the chain repaired and re-installed/re-applied (for lack of better words) they can opt to have it re-welded. No matter how you slice it, there are options. Occasionally, we simply weld on a clasp and everybody is happy. As a matter of fact, sometimes we weld a clasp on in the first place if that’s what the customer wants. We still have a totally customized piece of jewelry that shows the gorgeous personality and character of its owner.

Some people call permanent jewelry “Forever Jewelry” or “Claspless Jewelry”. Some people call it an Infinity Bracelet (or necklace or anklet). I personally call it “Seamless”, but I’m totally leaning more towards the infinity concept (because it fits the idea of permanent jewelry perfectly). The most important thing to remember, is no matter what you call it, it’s not indestructible jewelry. And everyone needs to know that from the get-go.

And might I add that in certain instances, you DO want the bracelet to break off so you don’t get injured. I had a great, heavy Silpada bracelet that I stopped wearing every day because it was likely to NOT break. If your bracelet, anklet, etc…gets caught on something, you WANT it to break. But that is another topic for another day.

No matter how you slice it, permanent jewelry, infinity jewelry, claspless jewelry- it’s all elegant and classy and dang fun to create and wear. So rather than rely on the idea of the permanence of it, let’s just remember to enjoy the beauty of it for as long as it lasts. ❤ ❤ ❤
