Permanent jewelry, also known as welded jewelry (or Forever Jewelry, Infinity Jewelry, etc…) is a unique and growing trend in the world of accessories. Unlike traditional jewelry that can be easily removed, permanent jewelry is designed to be worn indefinitely, creating a seamless and uninterrupted style statement.
The Permanent Jewelry Concept
Permanent jewelry is created by fusing or welding a piece of jewelry, typically a bracelet or anklet- directly onto the client. If this sounds alarming, hold up a sec. The jewelry isn’t welded onto the body (which is literally what a lot of us think at first). The jewelry is welded to itself, most often using a little, tiny ring that you connect the ends of the chain with and weld shut. That tiny ring simply connects the ends of the chain together in order for it to be easily welded- with just a spark!
This process involves using a specialized welder, meant to be used for permanent jewelry. Small, protective coverings are worn over the area being welded- and protective eyewear may also be worn. Since this is actual welding, the eyes must be protected to avoid injury. Often, we just have people look in the other direction. or keep the welding area shielded so it’s not easily visible by customers or others who might be in the area. The most common body parts for permanent jewelry are the wrists and ankles, but it’s ok to make it interesting and create a permanent jewelry piece for any part of the body that would accommodate it. Some opt for belly chains, hand chains and even necklaces. The chain is sized to fit perfectly and the jump ring is closed and welded on the wearer. The result is a potentially permanent, secure attachment that will give you many moons of delight.
But what’s this “potentially” permanent deal? Well, fortunately, you can easily remove your permanent jewelry piece by simply cutting that jump ring with a pair of scissors, or use my favorite method, which is nail clippers. You just cut the jump ring that was welded to hold your bracelet together and voila! All done! (Word of caution- watch your eyes when you clip or cut. You DO NOT want any metal pieces flying into your eyes. I simply cover the ring I am clipping with my fingers or a small cloth to avoid any problems.
The Allure of Permanent Jewelry

One of the primary appeals of permanent jewelry is the sense of permanence and commitment it represents. By choosing to have a piece of jewelry “permanently” attached to their body, wearers are making a statement about their personal style, values, and identity. For some, the permanence of the jewelry can symbolize a significant life event, such as a wedding, anniversary, or the start of a new chapter. It can also symbolize connection with friends and family, or other loved ones. Very often, friends will come to get matching jewelry, with matching chains or charms to symbolize their connection and enduring friendships. We also do a lot of mother/daughter permanent jewelry as well.
The Jewelry Itself
Permanent jewelry is typically crafted from high-quality metals, such as gold or silver, to ensure durability and longevity. Other high quality metals are used as well, such as gold filled, which comes in white, yellow and rose gold. These options allow for you to choose an exquisite, solid or silver piece, or you can mix and match both metals and chain styles to create a look that you love. Some permanent jewelry artists even offer stainless steel because some customers like the look of it, or fear that other metals might be problematic for them. No matter what metal you choose. the designs can range from simple and minimalist to intricate and decorative, allowing wearers to choose a piece that aligns with their personal aesthetic.
When choosing your chain, it’s good to remember how jewelry has affected your skin, and how your skin and other chemicals in your environment has effected your jewelry. For instance, there are many people who can’t wear silver because the pH of their skin will discolor the metal. Others can’t wear silver due to the work that they do- if they are around chemicals in the air or that they come into contact with (cleaning products, lotions, perfumes, etc) or if they have habits that might cause the metal of their choice to tarnish (like swimming or hanging out in hot tubs). Consider your history with jewelry and use that information to help you decide which metal to choose. Some people with a history of issues with jewelry may opt for solid gold, and others may even prefer stainless steel to avoid reactions.
The Welding Process

The process of permanently attaching jewelry to the body is typically performed by a trained and experienced professional, who is skilled at and familiar with the intricacies of micro-welding. It is important for wearers to seek out a reputable and experienced professional who uses proper protocols and equipment to ensure the safety and quality of the procedure.
Considerations and Aftercare
Permanent jewelry requires little consideration and aftercare. It is easily cleaned in the shower with a soft bristle brush and a gentle body wash or shampoo. It can also be cleaned using a small amount of dish soap and a small brush over the sink, taking care to rinse all the detergent from the skin and jewelry. Some metals can be successfully cleaned and polished with a jewelry polishing cloth. Occasionally, pieces can be removed for a deep cleaning (if the silver is badly tarnished, for instance) and re-welded back on.
Other Concerns to Consider
It is a good idea to remove your jewelry when required for medical treatments, but also- any time you will be doing an unusual activity that might pose the risks of your jewelry getting caught on something. This would include sport activities, operating machinery or anything else that could endanger the wearer of permanent jewelry. At my studio, I offer complimentary re-welds when customers have upcoming activities that concern them because I would rather be safe than sorry. And along that note, if you regularly engage in activities that would make it unwise to wear permanent jewelry (sports, operating machinery, etc…) it might be best to opt for jewelry with clasps that can be easily removed on a daily basis as needed.
The Popularity of Permanent Jewelry
As the trend of permanent jewelry continues to grow, an increasing number of jewelry professionals are offering these unique and specialized services. From small, independent studios to larger jewelry brands, the availability of permanent jewelry options has expanded significantly in recent years.
The popularity of permanent jewelry can be attributed to a few key factors:
- Personal Expression: The ability to permanently attach a piece of jewelry to one’s body allows for a more personal and expressive form of accessorizing. Wearers can choose designs that reflect their individual style, interests, or life events.
- Convenience: For those who tend to lose or misplace traditional jewelry, permanent jewelry offers a convenient and secure solution, ensuring that the accessory is always present and accounted for.
- Symbolism: The permanence of the jewelry can hold deep personal meaning for some wearers, representing commitment, self-care, or a significant life milestone.
- Fashion Trend: As with many fashion and accessory trends, the unique and eye-catching nature of permanent jewelry has contributed to its growing popularity, especially among younger generations and trendsetters.
Conclusion
Permanent jewelry is a unique and increasingly popular form of accessorizing that offers wearers a way to express their personal style and make a bold statement. By welding a piece of jewelry onto the body, individuals can create a seamless and uninterrupted look that is both fashionable and meaningful.
While the process of attaching permanent jewelry requires the assistance of a trained professional and some consideration for aftercare, the benefits of convenience, personal expression, and symbolic significance make it an alluring option for those seeking a unique and lasting way to accessorize.
As the trend of permanent jewelry continues to grow, it will be exciting to see the new and innovative designs that emerge, and how individuals continue to use this form of accessorizing to showcase their individuality and make a lasting statement.
